Informants of Offshore Tax Evasion to be Rewarded
March 10, 2014 by

CRA is offering awards via a tax-tip hotline, with the Offshore Tax Informant Program.

With the introduction of the Offshore Tax Informant Program (OTIP), the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is offering incentive for anyone in the world to provide tips concerning Canadian companies and/or individuals who are committing international tax evasion and aggressive tax avoidance. The awards range from 5 to 15 percent of the federal tax collected related to the international tax non-compliance.

In order for an informant to receive an award, however, the potential assessment of federal taxes must exceed $100,000, excluding interest and penalties. In addition, an individual must provide the CRA with specific and credible details of a case that lead to additional taxes being assessed and collected in order to be eligible as an informant. Informants may not be individuals convicted of tax evasion regarding the information that is being provided, who look to benefit or profit from their own tax evasion.

For more information on the Offshore Tax Informant Program, or to learn more about who is eligible to be an informant, please visit the Canada Revenue Agency website.

To provide a tip to the CRA concerning international tax evasion, tipsters can call toll-free in North America at 1-855-345-9042 or from anywhere in the world at 613-960-4265.

Please contact us at 604-922-3930 if you have any questions regarding the OTIP.
